Hill's Farwell

So this post is about my wonderful grandma and grandpa Hill who are leaving in a few weeks to go and work in the Nauvoo temple for six months! Their farewell was on Sunday and it was really great. Of course I forgot to take a picture with them but here are a few pictures I did get.

So this post might be a little weird to some people, but I think its awesome! It is random, I will admit that. So I have a Saturday class once a month and i get a pretty long lunch. So Chad and I finished lunch early the first time and didn't know what to do to kill time. So we just kind of drove around in the avenues.

Then Chad remembered that there was a really cool cemetery up there so we decided to take a look at it. It was so cool we went back a second time last Saturday and this is what we found.


I think the inscription on this one is very inspiring.

• James Edward Talmage (September 21, 1862 – July 27, 1933) born in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1911 until his death in 1933.

• John Smith (22 September 1832 – 6 November 1911), was the fifth Presiding Patriarch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). His father was Hyrum Smith, the older brother of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism.

• George Albert Smith (June 26, 1817 – September 1, 1875) (commonly known as George A. Smith to distinguish him from his grandson of the same name) was an early leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and as a member of the church's First Presidency. Son of John Smith.

• John Henry Smith (September 18, 1848 – October 13, 1911) was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was a prominent politician in Utah and played an important role in the process whereby Utah made the transition from a Territory to a State of the United States. Son of George A. Smith.
  

• George Albert Smith, Sr. (April 4, 1870 – April 4, 1951) was the eighth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Biographer and historian S. George Ellsworth has called Smith "an example of Christlike living."^{[1] His father is John Henry Smith and his grandfather is George A. Smith.}

So I was really excited to see this one.... I thought it was Parley P. Pratt at first, but it turned out to be his brother Orson. I looked up where Parley died and here is what i found...

• Parley P. Pratt-12 April 1807 – 13 May 1857)^[1] was a leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and an original member of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1835 until his murder in 1857. He served in the Quorum with his younger brother, Orson Pratt. He was a missionary, poet, religious writer and longtime editor of the religious publication The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star. Scenic Parley's Canyon in Salt Lake City, earlier known as Big Canyon, was renamed in his honor.

• On 13 May 1857, he was killed by Hector McLean on a farm northeast of Van Buren, Arkansas. Pratt was buried near Alma, Arkansas, despite his personal desire to be buried in Utah. (Huh-- I never knew this. Very interesting.)

• Orson Pratt (September 19, 1811 – October 3, 1881) was a leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and an original member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. He was born in Hartford, New York, USA, the son of Jared and Charity Dickenson Pratt.

  Orson Pratt died of complications from diabetes on October 3, 1881, the last surviving member of the original Council of the Twelve.

• Wilford Woodruff, Sr. (March 1, 1807 – September 2, 1898) was the fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1889 until his death. Woodruff's large collection of diaries provide an important record of Latter Day Saint history.

• Heber Jeddy Grant (November 22, 1856 – May 14, 1945) was the seventh president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was ordained an apostle on October 16, 1882, on the same day as George Teasdale. Grant served as church president from November 23, 1918 to his death in 1945, which makes him the longest-serving church president during the twentieth century.

• John Taylor (November 1, 1808 – July 25, 1887) was the third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1880 to 1887. Taylor was born in Milnthorpe, Westmorland (now part of Cumbria), England, the son of James and Agnes Taylor.

David Oman McKay (September 8, 1873 – January 18, 1970) was the ninth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), serving from 1951 until his death. Ordained an apostle and member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1906, McKay was a general authority for nearly sixty-four years, longer than anyone else in LDS Church history.





And last but not least...

• Gordon Bitner Hinckley (June 23, 1910 – January 27, 2008) was an American religious leader who served as the fifteenth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from March 12, 1995 until his death. He was the oldest person to preside over the church in its history.^[1] As president of the church, he was considered by its members to be a prophet, seer, and revelator.

There was so much history in this cemetery it amazes me!! And I am sure we didn't even get to all the apostles and prophets buried there yet. Stay tuned for a second installment of whose buried in the Avenues cemetery!

Random scenery

So this picture is just one I snapped on my way to class. This is the beautiful scenery I get to see Monday through Thursday. I am posting this for all of my family in California that don't get to see where we live. I will really really miss the beautiful mountains when Chad and I move back to California in a year.

Valentines...maybe

So I am a really big loser and I didn't take any pictures of us on Valentines Day!! I always do that! Dang. So here is a pretend picture of us on V-Day. It is actually the day after but I am pretending it is the actual thing. Please don't burst my bubble and tell me otherwise. Let's just pretend.


So we went shopping on Valentines! Something we don't get to do very often because of our limited budget. Instead of buying each other a V-day gift we decided to get new clothes instead. We are very much alike in that we love new clothes!! So we went shopping, got some See's Candy and then went out to dinner at Red Lobster. Last year we were broke so it was fun to something this year. I know a lot of people think that Valentines Day is commercialized and overrated, and maybe it is. But I love it. It's a day to show your love for your significant other and enjoy time with each other. So normally I am not the type of person to post things I buy but I am just really excited because I found some really good deals! I got two ways awesome purses for $20. As in $10 each. yeah i know. I also got these really cute shoes.




Chad also got some new Nikes. He is wearing them at school right now so I couldn't get a picture but they are really nice. He also got this blue Volcom polo.


Yeah for Valentines Day! Hope everyone else's was good!!

Green Bug & too many books

Funny story....our car is in the shop....again. I have decided that our car is possessed. It is the spawn of Satan.....literally. Anyways, that is not what this post is about. If it was, I would probably go on and on for a long long time, like I am now. So, our car is in the shop for longer than we planned and the place its at graciously offered us a free rental car because they couldn't figure out what was wrong yet. So we are pretty excited. We don't have to make arrangements for one car, plus we get it for free! I don't think that happens very often. So, our next question... what kind of car do we get? The answer to this was not what we were hoping for. The only car they had left...

Yes, thats right a lime green Volkswagen bug. On a side note, every time we see a guy driving one of these cars, which seems to be more often than not, we laugh hysterically and think 'why would a guy want to drive one of those.' So it just so happens that Chad had to drive this car home from the mechanics shop. Needless to say I laughed pretty hard when I found this out. Chad on the other hand, didn't think it was funny. I have been driving the car in order to spare Chad the humiliation. I'm not really a fan of the car either. I loved them when I was 14 and actually wanted a lime green one. Funny how much changes in 6 years. Now I just think it is ironic that my lime green coat from Old Navy matches the color of my rental car. Gosh we really hate our stupid Audi. Oh well.

On another note, I have been reading a lot! By a lot I mean a lot. This is the book I am currently working on for my media and the marginalized class. It's only 4 Saturdays out of the whole semester and I thought it would be a piece of cake. Well, it's not exactly hard, just a looooot of reading. I had to read the first 300 page book in a week because I signed up for the class late. The next book I am afraid to say I procrastinated in starting. It is huge!



A total of 400 pages and really small print. It has so many names and jumps around so much. It's on the civil rights era and press coverage of it. So it's a really good topic and there are a lot interesting facts, but just so dense! So my class is on Saturday and I am only on page 237. So it is my goal to get to 300 tonight and finish the rest by Saturday. We will see if that actually happens. Anyone who knows me knows I love to read, but I am slowly starting to hate it (not really, I will always love to read) . I just can't wait to be done with this class. Only one more book after this to go. Then I can read books at my own pace and read ones that I actually want to read!

Oh and on one more note Chad and I just want to say how excited we are for Chad's sister Emily who is getting married on April 25th!! Yay! We haven't met her fiance, but we are sure he is wonderful. Here is the wonderful bride to be.

Congratulations!! We can't wait to come for your wedding!

5 points for Chad

So its Valentines day...and its nice to be married because I actually have a Valentine for once. Chad and I have a three day weekend so this is just the first day of a wonderful weekend. We are excited to get to spend so much time together. Last night Chad "went out" to the ATM to get $20 bucks, or so he said. He actually went to get these...




I guess they were an early Valentine's day gift. So some might think flowers are overrated, I think I used to. But the times Chad has gotten me flowers always make me happy. It's just a nice
gesture I think. Flowers are beautiful and I think that when a husband buys flowers for his wife it should be because he thinks she is as beautiful as the flowers. Ok, sorry, didn't mean to get that cheesy. Anyways, my husband is wonderful and although we don't keep score I give him 5 points for the flowers. Love you babe.

Rest in peace blenny...

So we bought a red-lip blenny a few weeks ago and sadly he passed away two nights ago. His death was quick and not painful. He will be missed.


Then just last night our clam died as well. Don't know if his death was quick, we think our new angel fish pecked at him to death. Goodbye Clam, you will also be missed.



And here is our new fish. She is a coral beauty and accordingly we(and I mean I, Chad thinks its silly to name them) named her Coral. She really is a beauty. I am a little mad because she killed our clam, but oh well.
